My Q&A With: Autumn In June

2

Despite releasing his debut EP only a few months ago, Autumn In June has been making a name for himself. With a growing fan base and eclectic sound, his music has gained attention around Southern California and features by notable publications such as NME. As he continues to play, he draws more and more into his “Autumn Family.” His latest single, “Hey Arnold,” has received many positive reviews from online websites, confirming that his unique approach to music has set him up for success, notoriety, and a lengthy creative career.

Your debut EP was released at the end of 2014, and has received significant positive attention since then, including a feature in NME. How has your experience been since the release?

It has been really great! I never know what to expect when I release songs so it was very reassuring when I started getting so much positive feedback. The best part of the exposure has been the growing fan base that I have been building, its great to see that my music is reaching so many people.

What does Autumn in June stand for?

It means being/feeling out of place in life, but still being brave enough to do what you really want to do. I’m from South Central LA so I grew up listening to the hip-hop and rap music so I fell into that crowd when I first started making music. After a while though I started to experiment with my music and started making indie-pop records and no one else was doing that in the hood so people would tell me that I’m in the wrong place at the wrong time, just like Autumn In June. Since then I just took on that name and became proud of actually doing what I want to do despite what people tell me.

How would you describe your sound?

I always say my songs are the ultimate songs to vibe to. I put a lot of emotion into my records and make sure that I only choose sounds that really make you feel them. I’m kinda obsessed with melodies so my songs are always pretty melodic, but they can also be pretty funky too, like 80’s disco music 🙂

How do you feel growing up in Los Angeles has influenced you?

LA is the bomb! It made me into a hustler haha, and it certainly influenced my whole view on life in a positive way. It’s easy to just go with the vibe and get lost in the chill zone out here, so I make sure I stay motivated. The city has a lot of talkers and only a few do-ers, so I make sure I’m always the one doing shit and getting things done. On the music side I have always loved West Coast rap, so growing up in the area of LA that created these sounds has definitely influenced the kind of music I make.

What do you hope to accomplish in 2015?

2015 is going to be a really big year for me! I’m trying to step up everything I have going on as an artist at least 3 levels. I have a new single being released in early April and it will feature a dope new video that I recently created. There will be more releases as the year goes on before I drop an EP later in the year. I’m also working really hard on my live performances, as I want to take unsigned music to a whole new level.

What has been your most exciting experience thus far?

I grew up listening to Dr. Dre and he’s always been one of my favorite producers so it was really dope meeting him and hanging out in his studio last year. Also releasing my debut EP last year and receiving so much positive feedback has been amazing!

Do you have any details about a debut album?

At this point I’m really just focused on singles and my next EP, I don’t really have any plans for an album right now but we’ll see where everything goes 🙂
